6th Grade- Go Bananas Cell Phone Challenge
As a 6th grade team we have decided to accept the "Go Bananas Challenge" and save the Gorillas. The "Go Bananas Challenge" is a program set up through the Cincinnati Zoo to save Gorillas in Africa. The program is simple, we collect as many old cell phones as we can, send them into the zoo where they will recycle the heavy metals. All mobile phone contain a metal called coltan, in the world 80% of it is found in Africa - where the mountain gorillas and the eastern lowland gorillas live.
We have set a 6th grade goal to collect 800 old cell phones, everyone has two or three old phones laying around the house. If we recycle these old phones not only will we be saving the planet, but we could win the "Go Bananas Challenge." The winning group with receive $4,000, each group that collects over 300 phones will also get a signed painting done by one of the gorillas at the Cincinnati Zoo.
I believe that this is a great program that can really give back to our world. The Challenge that I have given my class then is to lead the charge and figure out a way to collect as many old cell phones as they can. We had a lot of great ideas in our brainstorming session today. Talk to your family tonight as decide how you can best help the cause.
You can look to family groups, community groups, church groups, school groups, anywhere you can think of to collect as many old cell phones as you can. The more cell phones we collect, the less they will have to mine the mountains of Africa.
The deadline for this project is the first of April, we have two months to make a difference. If you have any questions, concerns, or ideas to help the project please let me know.

3rd Grade- Letters to Vetrans
The third grade chose to write letters to veterans in honor of Veterans Day, thanking them for their hard work and sacrifice. Each student wrote and colored a card that was delivered to the VA Hospital. We received a letter of thanks for this service.
2nd Grade- Lawn Rangers
Second grade classrooms call themselves "The Lawn Rangers" as they go outside weekly to pick up and sort out trash on our school property. A real life study of what things are biodegradable and what can be recycled leads to on-going lessons about caring for our earth by starting with our community.
